figures in Suphanburi who have ensured the successful
conservation of this important heritage complex.

As you may know, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards
recognize private sector efforts that have successfully conserved
buildings of heritage value in the region. UNESCO believes that
recognizing private efforts to restore and adapt historic structures
will encourage other property owners to undertake conservation

projects within the community, either independently or by seeking
             public-private partnerships.
Over the past ten years of this Awards programme, the winning

projects have had a tremendous impact on conservation in their
     4
neighborhoods and in their countries. Many winning projects have
set new technical standards in conservation. Others have provided
an inspiring demonstration of the political feasibility of conserving
historic buildings. And most importantly, the winning projects have

shown beyond a doubt that conservation should be a shared
responsibility between the government and civil society.
In Thailand, UNESCO has recognized a range of projects for

their outstanding conservation works. This ranges from palace
structures, such as Phra Racha Wang Derm Palace and the
Tamnak Yai at Devavesm Palace, to community conservation
projects – namely Wat Sra Tong in Khon Kaen, Wat Pongsanuk
in Lampang, the Amphawa Canal Community in Samut Songkram,
